The Green Hotel

project status: on the drawing table

The Green Hotel is a vital and vibrating meeting place of the Green Campus. It serves campus guests (course members, parents of students, congress participants), visitors of the Green Campus and business people of Technopolis, YES!Delft , TNO the future labs etc. It provides conference/meeting rooms, education facilities, restaurants, pubs and leisure opportunities.

Water ponds function for thermal energy buffering and drinking water production (by helophytes) as well. And of course we can produce fish in this water which will be freshly consumed at the restaurants.

Exciting architecture is combined with rigorous sustainability concepts, such as:

  • Very energy efficient both for climate control and electricity use.
  • Heat and cold storage and balancing, using the ground for heating and cooling.
  • Net energy production from solar, wind, movement (piezoelectric) and bio-waste.
  • LED lighting, integrated in building materials and products.
  • Sustainable bio-building materials.
  • The use of sustainable, cradle to cradle products.
  • Intelligent monitoring and control
  • The production of new materials from the hotel’s waste.
  • Water recycling, cleaning and separate water circuits.
  • Sustainable and electric transportation from and to the hotel.

The Green Fast Food restaurant

project status: initiation phase

Together with one of the world’s largest fast food restaurant chains, a sustainable concept will be developed for the fast food restaurant on the Green Campus Ground. An integral concept dealing with sustainable energy use, building materials, and food and packaging use with a minimum ecological footprint at chain level, without compromising the attractiveness to the public at large. Recycling of biodegradable plastics with bacteria that make new polymers for bio-plastic production will be one of the items and fresh vegetables will be grown in a greenhouse on top or around the restaurant. This fully integrated concept will be an exciting and challenging topic for development and research. It will be further developed continuously, to integrate new technologies, concepts and products.

The challenge is to incorporate radical sustainability concepts into normal life experiences and to fit this within commercially viable concepts. The restaurant will serve students and personnel from the university, visitors of the Green Campus and also travelers from the highway. They will enjoy and can experience the Green Campus. It will give them a glimpse of a sustainable future.

The Energy Fitness Centre

project status: initiation phase

At the Green Campus Grounds, which is located near the sports facilities and sport fields of the TUD, a large fitness and health center will be developed. In this very energy efficient center, you can even produce your own electricity while you work out. The energy you produce is stored on a “credit card” to use it elsewhere, e.g. in the computer room or in your electric Segway or bike. Competitions will be held: who or what team produces most energy.
