The Green Campus development requires several years. Companies, scientists, students and (local) governments will join forces to develop the technical and commercial concepts in detail, and to draw up the blueprints for realization from start to finish, including permitting procedures and the embedding in local development plans. However these commercial and technical concepts for the innovative technologies, products, business models and services need to be tested.

The Green Village will therefore provide the environment and possibility to assess the Green Campus concepts. The Green Village is a temporary test and try out laboratory site on the TU Delft campus. Involved parties will share working space within the environment that they are creating to ensure maximum knowledge transfer. A modular, extendable concept will be developed in 2012 and be built early 2013. It will provide all necessary functionality over a period of 4-6 years when the first Green Campus buildings will be realized. After this, the Green Village will be dismantled, sold and the area will be restored to its original state.

The Green Village will be realized on the same principles as The Green Campus: sustainable, and commercially viable. Concepts and technical installations for the Green Campus will be designed and tested here at a relevant scale in combination with front-end commercially available solutions. Private investments will be attracted, which makes the generation of revenues indispensible. Therefore, the test environment with the Green Company development labs, company residences, offices and meeting rooms will be combined with functions that make the area attractive for visitors and workers, and that generate additional income. The Green Village will house a green lunchroom, the Green Campus shop, LED art expositions, a rental station for green personal transportation and so on.
